When Michigan was initially settled, people had free reign to make city names however they wanted. Keep in mind, the Internet didn't exist, of course. People couldn't tell if another city or village had the same name. And that's how Michigan has so many "twin name" cities & villages. Here, you'll see five of them, including one right here in Genesee County and another just to our north in Tuscola County.

Are there two cities named Flat Rock, Michigan?

Flat Rock, MI in the lower peninsula is situated in the southeast. If you have driven I-75, you've probably noticed signs for the exit. The Lower Peninsula Flat Rock became a city in 1965.

The other Flat Rock in Michigan is in the Upper Peninsula just a touch northwest of Escanaba.

Our two Dayton cities are located in Michigan's Lower Peninsula. The closest is (below) in Tuscola County near Caro.

The second Dayton is on the west side of the state in Berrien County. This Dayton was named after settlers that moved from Dayton, Ohio (according to Hometown Life).

The second of our Mt. Pleasant cities is on the west side of Michigan's Lower Peninsula. It's unincorporated and resort-town like, right on Lake Michigan in Casco Township.

Are there two cities named Burton, Michigan?

With over 30,000 people, the Burton most of us know borders, Flint, MI. Locals lovingly nickname it "Burtucky." While it doesn't have a downtown like most cities, it does have a "campus" which includes city offices, courts, etc. They even do an annual tree lighting in that area.
