Michigan’s First Annual Mott Lake Regatta Approved for This August
If you have ever had the opportunity to attend one of the past Detroit Riverfront Hydrofest events, then you already know what it's like to see boats fly across the water at over 150 MPH in Michigan. The event is like NASCAR for boats, and it's coming to Genesee County.
War Of the Wake Mott Lake Regatta Approved
For those unfamiliar with C.S. Mott Lake, it is a 596-acre lake off of the Flint River known for its fishing and beautiful scenery. Since 1972, this body of freshwater has been loved by locals and visitors alike.
And although Mott Lake is, and has always been, a 'no wake' body of water, the county Parks and Recreation commission has already approved using Mott Lake for the event, and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has agreed to lift no-wake restrictions on the lake during the weekend of Aug. 12-13, 2023, when the two-day race is planned to take place.
What Can Spectators Expect to Experience?
When boats are built specifically for speed, you can expect to see racers fly by at over 150 MPH on a cushion of air with not much more than a propeller, rudder, and some kind of stabilizing 'skid fin' touching the water.
These boats are truly something that have to be experienced in person as no words, or even videos, can do them justice.
And, according to a presentation by organizers to commissioners, this event could draw as many as 40 teams participating in different classes.
What Are the Mott Lake Regatta Specifics?
According to the event page on LocalHop, the regatta will take place on the weekend of August 12th & 13th 2023, from 12:00pm - 5:00pm.
The family friendly sporting event is open to people of all ages.
Viewing will be from Bluebell Beach, where there will be food trucks and a Beer Garden.
Tickets will be available onsite on the days of the race. Pricing information is available on LocalHop's page for the event.
Mark your calendars for a weekend of fun and excitement and hopefully the first Mott Lake Regatta - War of The Wake is the first of many more to come.
Since this is the first regatta event on Mott Lake, there are obviously no past pictures or videos to show. So, to give you an idea of what's in store for those who attend in August, please enjoy this 'Gold Cup Final Heat' video from the 2018 Metro Detroit event. Keep in mind, these high-powered hydroplane boats will not be the same ones that grace Mott Lake in August. We just want to give you an idea of a similar event.
