This Is One of the Most Hazardous and Toxic Houseplants in Michigan

Dieffenbachia, known as Dumb Cane, is considered a potentially dangerous houseplant if mishandled or ingested.

According to The Gardening Cook, the plant's poison can temporarily cause an inability to speak.

The plant contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause intense pain and swelling if they come into contact with the mouth, throat, or skin.

Look, we're not saying that you need to go and toss out your Dumb Cane plants, they're perfectly fine throughout your home. However, if you have pets or young children, you might want to keep this plant out of reach.

While the burning sensation of ingesting this plant is mild and temporary, the problems are more severe for children and pets.

The effects are rarely life-threatening. I was only able to find one article that talked about someone's poodle dying due to consuming a potted Dumb Cane plant.

To sum it up, some houseplants can be harmful if eaten. So, remember: don't eat your houseplants.
