Macomb County is set to become home to a new $10 million indoor pickleball center, funded through the Pathway to Play & Preservation millage approved by voters.

The new center is taking shape inside a vacant building on Van Dyke Avenue, just north of 15 Mile Road. Sterling Heights city officials were recently on hand to break ground on the exciting project.

According to the Macomb Daily, the new facility will feature nine pickleball courts, six table tennis courts, community areas, and even a meditation room. There will also be space for nursing mothers, locker rooms, and restrooms.

What is pickleball?

Pickleball combines parts of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Players use paddles that look like larger ping-pong paddles and hit a lightweight, perforated plastic ball over a net.

People are nuts about the sport. You can find indoor and outdoor courts in the following Michigan cities,

  • Fenton
  • Battle Creek
  • Lansing
  • Portage
  • Traverse City
  • Ypsilanit
  • Marquette
  • Jackson
  • Troy
  • Kalamazoo
  • Muskegon

These are just a few of the many places to play. To explore more pickleball court locations across the Great Lakes State, visit the Pickleheads website for a full list.

Are you a seasoned pickleball player? I know plenty of people who can’t get enough of the game, but surprisingly, I have never actually played myself.

When will the new pickleball center in Sterling Heights officially open?

As of now, the pickleball center is expected to be ready for action by July 2026. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on this exciting Michigan project.
