Things Get Weird Fast in Court for Romulus School Shooting Suspect

What should’ve been a pretty straightforward court hearing turned into something straight out of a bad reality show. The behavior was bizarre, to say the least.

Video from Fox 2 Detroit shows a Romulus courtroom where 44-year-old Shawntez Gregory can be seen plugging his ears and swearing at the judge while being arraigned. At one point, he even told the judge to “get a real job.”

His name might sound familiar. Police say this is the same man who showed up at Romulus Middle School earlier this week with a gun and fired seven shots outside the main entrance.

Yeah. Outside a middle school.

Gregory showed up at the school on Tuesday morning and tried to get inside. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. The building is locked down, and visitors have to be buzzed in. A school secretary spotted him outside and called it in before things got too far out of control. Police moved fast and had him in custody within just a couple of minutes.

During the hearing, Judge Lisa Martin stayed calm and cool as could be while going over what prosecutors say happened.

Prosecutors say this wasn’t Gregory’s first run-in with police, either. There have been multiple trespassing complaints in the past, along with violations of court orders involving his son.

The charges are heavy. A terrorist threat against a school, plus six additional felony counts.

Gregory’s family has said he has schizophrenia, which adds another complicated layer to an already troubling situation. Still, when a gun shows up at a school, there’s no room for excuses.

This could’ve ended so much worse.
