Early Reports Show Michigan Could Be in for a Different Kind of Winter

If you’re already dreading another long Michigan winter, join the club. However, there may actually be some good news on the horizon. Maybe.

El Niño is already in place, and according to MLive, it’s expected to keep getting stronger heading into winter.

What Exactly Is El Niño?

El Niño happens when parts of the Pacific Ocean get warmer than normal, and that can shift weather patterns across the country.

For Michigan, that can mean less bitter Arctic air dropping down from Canada during the winter. If you're not a fan of winter, that's a win-win.

Michigan Could Be Looking at a Warmer Winter

Strong El Niño winters have often been warmer than normal in Michigan. It’s worth pointing out that I said warmer, not warm.

That doesn’t mean no snow, no cold, or some magically easy winter. Come on, this is still Michigan. It's going to feel like winter no matter what.

That part is pretty hard to predict this far out, unless you’re a big believer in the Farmers’ Almanac. I’ll admit, I still have a hard time getting on board with how they come up with those long-range forecasts.

During past strong El Niño winters, Michigan’s overall precipitation has usually stayed pretty close to normal.

The big question is how much of that actually falls as snow. That’s the part we’ll have to keep an eye on as we get closer to winter.
