What seemed like a scam turned out to be life-changing. A Westland woman has won $1 million in the Michigan Lottery.

Valerie Williams, 65, uses the Michigan Lottery app to scan her Electric lottery tickets for winnings. She didn’t realize that scanning them also automatically enters players into second-chance drawings.

Ms. Williams was hesitant when she received a call from the Michigan Lottery. Like most people, she was reluctant.

When I saw an incoming call from the Michigan Lottery one day, I was hesitant to answer because I assumed it was a scam, but I ended up answering to see what it was about.

Lucky for her, she answered. Valerie Williams was one of five people selected to attend a Michigan Lottery Electric Giveaway at Comerica Park during a Detroit Tigers Game.

The finalists were each given a Michigan Lottery t-shirt to wear. A host was in charge of spinning a wheel, and the winner of the $1 million prize was determined by what color the wheel landed on.

The color that led to riches? Green, just like cold hard cash.

As shown in the video below, every contestant except Valerie Williams brought a good luck charm. This is proof that we can make our own luck.

According to the Michigan Lottery, Williams plans to save her $1 million jackpot for now and is likely planning a future vacation with her husband.

Due to the increase in phone scams, it is normal to be cautious about unknown callers. However, if the Michigan Lottery contacts me, it might be a call worth answering, with caution.
