Nothing stresses me out more when I’m driving than heavy traffic or being in an area where it feels like everybody is in a hurry and nobody is paying attention.

You know the kind of drive I’m talking about. You’re surrounded by cars, people are constantly changing lanes, somebody is riding your bumper, and you’re just trying to get where you’re going without getting hit. Honestly, I'm stressed just thinking about it.

There are definitely some places in Michigan where driving feels a little more stressful than others, and it looks like there are numbers to back that up.

Michigan Communities With the Highest Crash Rates

Michigan Auto Law looked at 2024 crash data from communities across the state to determine which cities and townships had the highest crash rates.

To make the list, a community had to have at least 10,000 residents and at least 500 crashes during the year. So, this ranking isn’t based simply on which places had the most crashes overall. Instead, each community was ranked by the number of crashes per 10,000 residents.

There are a few places on this list that really surprised me. Detroit, for example, had more than 24,000 crashes in 2024 but still didn’t crack the Top 10 because, again, this ranking is based on population. If it were based strictly on the total number of crashes, Detroit would easily be No. 1.
