If you’ve got older parents, grandparents, or even neighbors still driving, this could affect them depending on their age.

There’s a new bill in Michigan that could change how older drivers keep their licenses. I’m actually kind of surprised this isn’t already a thing.

Will Michigan Drivers Over 75 Have to Retake Driving Tests?

Yes. Under this proposal, once someone turns 75, they’d have to start going to the Secretary of State every four years to pass a vision test, a written test, and an actual driving test just to keep their license. I'm so on board with this.

And it doesn’t stop there.

According to ABC 12, once they hit 85, it ramps up to doing those tests every single year.

So basically, the older you get, the more often you’ve got to prove you can still safely be behind the wheel. So why would anybody argue this?

Why Michigan Lawmakers Want New Rules for Older Drivers

The push for this bill comes after a deadly crash involving an elderly driver. That situation is what got lawmakers thinking maybe it’s time to take another look at how often drivers are tested as they age.

Now, before anyone freaks out…this thing isn’t law. Not even close. It's all in the beginning stages.

It still has to go through committees, get voted on, and then potentially be signed by the governor. So there’s a long road ahead before anything actually changes.

My parents are both in their 80s, and while they’re still safe drivers, I’d feel more comfortable knowing there were at least some extra checks in place just to make sure everything’s still good.

Not saying they shouldn’t be driving…just saying a little reassurance wouldn’t be the worst thing.

So, who do you call? If you hit one of these animals, you’ll want to contact the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) or local law enforcement. If it’s an actual emergency, call 911; otherwise, just dial the non-emergency number. They’ll handle the situation and make sure everything's squared away. Just don’t forget to report it.
