It’s hard to believe the 4th of July weekend is already here. What’s not hard to believe is that lots of Michiganders will be heading straight to the beach, especially with these downright unbearable hot and humid temps.

Last week, nearly a dozen Michigan beaches were either closed or under a contamination advisory. This week it’s not as bad, but there are still a few you need to watch out for, just in case.

The last thing you want is to pack up the family car with the kids, toys, snacks, and whatever else you need for a fun day at the beach, only to find out it's either closed or under some kind of contamination warning.

These Michigan beaches are currently under a contamination advisory:

  • Dumont Lake County Park Beach, Allegan County - contamination advisory since June 18 due to high levels of E. coli.
  • Sylvan Lake, Oakland County - contamination advisory since June 27 due to stormwater runoff.
  • St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach, Macomb County - contamination advisory since June 24 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.
  • Sunset Park, Grand Traverse County - contamination advisory since June 24 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source.

Keep in mind, these beaches aren’t closed—they’re just under an advisory. Also, this list is changing nearly every day with advisories and closures. You can check daily on the Beach Guard Website.

That said, there’s no way I’d take my kid swimming at a beach with a contamination warning. Not a chance.
