This Dog Breed Is Illegal to Have as a Pet in Michigan
If there’s one thing Michiganders love, it’s their dogs, and most don’t think of them as pets... they’re family.
As crazy as it sounds, there are some people who think man's best friend is actually the most dangerous animal in the state. I disagree, but I understand the logic when it comes to dog attacks.
For the most part, dogs are some of the most loyal and loving creatures on the planet. Some of the most popular breeds around here include Labs, Goldens, poodles, German Shepherds, and French Bulldogs.
Did you know there is one breed of dog that's illegal to have as a pet in Michigan? I've lived here my entire life and never heard of such a thing. I've heard how you're not allowed to own certain breeds in some neighborhoods or apartment complexes, but I didn’t realize there’s actually a dog breed that’s banned at the state level.
What Dog Breed Is Illegal to Have as a Pet in Michigan?
The only dog that's outright illegal to own anywhere in the state is a wolf-dog.
And if you're like me, you're probably wondering, what in the heck is a wolf-dog?
A wolf-dog is exactly what it sounds like: part dog, part wolf. Usually, it’s a mix between a domestic breed like a Husky or German Shepherd and a gray wolf.
Some people think they’re cool or want one as a unique pet, but they’re not fully domesticated and can be pretty unpredictable. Unpredictable can also mean dangerous. So yeah, if you’ve got one or were thinking about it, you’re out of luck in this state.
However, not every state feels the same way. Some places do allow wolf-dogs as pets, usually with special permits or restrictions. But here in Michigan, the law is pretty clear...wolf dogs are a no-go, unless you had a permit before the ban went into effect. If that’s the case, you're basically grandfathered in... but new permits aren't being handed out.
