The next time you head over to Flint Township's Genesee Valley Center for some shopping, don’t go on an empty stomach hoping to grab a bite in the upstairs food court—you’ll end up disappointed. Unfortunately, every restaurant is now closed. The food court at the Valley is no more.

I remember when all the big fast-food chains filled the upstairs food court at Genesee Valley, and you couldn’t find a table because it was so jam-packed. It looks like those days are long gone.

While the Genesee Valley Center is still open and operating, they have had their fair share of issues over the years, including water main breaks, flooding, utility issues, and most recently, no air conditioning when it was extremely hot outside.

On August 14, Jamie Neal went up and captured video footage of the food court and what it looks like today. She noted that even the escalators and elevator were closed, so they had to take the stairs.

The video Neal shared below shows an empty, almost apocalyptic food court.

Jamie Neal:

In June I went through the mall and made a list of stores that were open. Grabbed our last bit of Habachi before it closed. You can see on Facebook how many of my peers and I are grieving a once live and active mall that once had curfews because of its popularity. When the world was more social in person.

Hey, maybe things will turn around and one day we’ll see the food court filled with people eating. Unfortunately, that day is not today.

Abandoned 1949 Mammoth Department Store in Detroit

Built in 1949, the Mammoth building started as the Federal Department Store, a vital part of the community. Over the years, different owners like Kingsway Department Stores and Mammoth Department Store shaped its history.

The doors officially closed in 2001 and it's been empty ever since.
