Most Michiganders only have a general idea of what "Mid-Michigan" actually is.

When it comes to regions in Michigan, the two that most people are familiar with are the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula. Outside of that, most of us just toss vague terms around such as Mid-Michigan, West Michigan, and the like.

However, have you ever actually stopped to see counties actually make up these regions? I never really thought too much about it until I had a conversation with a couple of friends about Lansing. This is where it kind of gets a little fuzzy.

Personally, I have never considered the "Capitol Region" around Lansing to be lumped in with Mid-Michigan. I viewed it as more of its own entity. As I discussed it with my friends though, I may be in the minority of that thought process.

So to get a definitive answer, I did want we all do...I consulted Google and Wikipedia. According to the infinite genius that is the internet, the Lansing area is indeed considered a part of Mid-Michigan. Central Michigan, a.k.a. Mid-Michigan, is broken into three parts that include the Capitol Region, the Great Lakes Bay Region, and Flint.

Which counties are considered to be "Mid-Michigan?"

According to Wikipedia, Mid-Michigan is made up of the following counties:

  • Arenac
  • Bay
  • Clare
  • Clinton
  • Eaton
  • Genesee
  • Gladwin
  • Gratiot
  • Ingham
  • Isabella
  • Lapeer
  • Midland
  • Saginaw
  • and Shiawassee

Personally, I still think the Lansing area should have its own separate identity, but to each their own.
