It's important to know that no matter what, you should always stop when a police car turns on its lights and prompts you to pull over. If you don't, in Michigan you could be charged with a misdemeanor for eluding police, which is punishable by up to six months in county jail and/or a $1,000 fine, and at worst a felony.

But is there a time when you should ignore being pulled over by the police? Even in case of an emergency, it's necessary to pull over so you can alert the officer of the emergency, and hopefully, they can help escort you to the hospital or at least let dispatch know. But the one time to be weary about initially pulling over falls into a very specific situation:

Unmarked Vehicles

Cops, for some reason, use unmarked vehicles and this can lead people to be cautious if they're signaled to pull over. If there's a warning that police are being impersonated in the area, pay particular attention to the vehicle they're in, the model, and the condition, and follow some tips from this legal website:

  • Turn on four-way hazard lights to notify the officer that the driver will pull over;
  • Assess the police car for make and model; in the United States, police sedans are almost always a Ford Crown Victoria, a Chevy Impala, a Dodge Intrepid, a Dodge Charger, or a Chevy Lumina; police SUVs are almost always a Chevy Tahoe, a Ford F150, or a Dodge Durango; also the vehicles are usually fairly new and in good condition
  • Call 911 and ask the dispatcher to verify that it is an actual police officer. Try to offer the dispatcher the make, model, and license plate of both vehicles, as well as the location; if a person has real reason to suspect they are being stopped by someone who is impersonating an officer, call 911 and ask for an immediate response.

If this ends up being the case, try and make your way to the local police station and get to safety. Otherwise, you always want to stop for a police officer.
