Every year tens of thousands of vehicles cross the Mackinac Bridge, whether it is for work, or for people vacationing, it is one of the most traveled bridges in the entire state. I myself am going to be crossing the bridge later this year in May to take a trip to the Upper Peninsula.
It’s important for people who have to cross the bridge regularly to make sure that they carry cash on them at all times. After all, it’s much cheaper to cross the bridge when you’ve got cash in hand and you can take off. Obviously, it takes a little bit more time when you have a card, and on top of that, there’s a service fee that you have to pay.

It’s because of the service fee that traveling to the Upper Peninsula by way of the Mackinac Bridge is going to be more expensive.
The fact is, there was supposed to be a convenience fee put in place on January 1 for anybody who is using their credit card, but that has now been delayed for at least two months, as mightymac.org - The Mackinac Bridge and Straits of Mackinac has announced on their Facebook.
The 2.3% convenience fee for the use of credit cards on the Mackinac Bridge was supposed to be effective January 1, but has not started because the software has not been updated. It may take another two or months or more. When it does begin, it will add 9 cents to a $4 passenger vehicle crossing.
Some people think the tax is actually a good idea, as one person commented:
People that use a credit card deserve to get charged more. It’s like a stupid tax because you don’t carry cash. It’s really stupid if you cross the bridge a lot.
