The judge, Kwamé Rowe, emphasized the "extensive planning" of the school shooting and highlighted Crumbley's deliberate actions, stating that he "continued to walk through the school, picking and choosing who was going to die." The judge described the attack as an "execution" and "torture," ultimately deeming it a "true act of terrorism".

Crumbley, who had pleaded guilty to 24 charges, including first-degree premeditated murder and terrorism causing death, was portrayed as the "sole participant" in the mass shooting, with the judge citing his disturbing writings and documented violence against animals as well as his bypassing of technical security on a jail tablet to watch graphic, violent content online
