As a newborn mom, there is nothing that irritates me more than someone knocking on my front door in the middle of the day. The dog starts barking, my baby wakes up, and the entire afternoon is derailed all because someone wanted to try to sell me something I have zero interest in. So, I invested in one of those nifty "no soliciting" signs

While most people are considerate, a few people have ignored my plea to leave us be, and continued to knock. It's aggrivating because they were warned ahead of time that an angry momma bear is waiting on the other side of that door. While, I would never likely do this... I wanted to know, can I call the cops on these people?

What can you do if someone ignores your no solicitation sign?

Unfortunately, there's not a lot you can do if someone decides to ignore your "no soliciting" sign. While Michigan has limited laws to hold people who insist on bugging you accountable, some cities have stricter ordinances. For example, if you live in Troy you can be added to a "no knock list" which is similiar to national the no call list. If someone still comes to your home, you can call the police on them.

However, you do have the right to report them if you so choose. Most cities and villages in Michigan require soliciters to register with the city or police department. So, you can ask for their ID and report them to the proper authorties in hopes they don't have their license renewed in the future. Although the people willing to break the rules, are likely to the the ones also not properly registered, so you again fall into the same problem as before.

Michigan does have a tresspassing law, but it doesn't really give you the right to do much more than call the police. They could end up with a $250 fine or 30 days in jail for breaking said law, but it's unlikely your complaint would make it to court. So calling the police may not solve your problem, especially if they leave before the law arrives to write them a ticket.

So, go ahead and put up that sign. It may deter the more polite and reasonable door to door annoyances, but unfortunately you're sort of SOL if they're knocking after seeing your posted request.
