Real ID Compliance

If you've renewed your license since the start of 2024, you've noticed your ID looks a little different from what it used to. However, that isn't the main thing you need to be aware of because whether you have an old or new ID, the gold icon in the corner is important.

Whether you have a standard or enhanced ID, the REAL ID requirement will affect you beginning May 7th. If you don't have this type of ID, you will not be able to board a plane for domestic travel. If you can't get your ID updated before the deadline, TSA has supplied alternative documents that are approved for travel, like a valid U.S. passport or an enhanced license or ID.

How To Update Your ID

Thankfully, the State of Michigan has made it easy to get your ID updated to a REAL ID if you are among the 26.5% who haven't done so yet. All you need to do is visit a Secretary of State office and bring your Michigan driver's license or ID and proof of legal presence.

The best part is that converting your ID is free if it is done when your license needs to be renewed, otherwise, it will cost $9 for a license or $10 for an ID to convert it at any other time.
