Wouldn't it be nice if scammers took some time off during the holidays?

But nope, instead they ramp up their scammy ways, knowing we're distracted and stressed out and more likely to fall for them.

Michigan State Police are reminding residents to watch out for holiday scams. MSP Third District posted to X,

Each year, we see an increase in scams during the holidays. This year we are seeing some new and disturbing trends.

Michigan Bank Scams

MSP says Michigan banks are reporting messages are being sent to their customers that seem legit, but aren't.

When I log into my credit union app, a pop-up warning alerts me that reports of scams are on the rise and advises caution - have you seen warnings like this too?

You're encouraged to contact your bank directly before sharing any information with a caller, texter, or emailer.

Michigan Security Scams

Michigan scam victims are also reporting being contacted by phone or email about "security issues" on their computer or devices. The fraudster convinces the victim to gather cash that will be collected "by an agent" at the victim's home for "safe-keeping". The scammer then takes off with the cash and disappears.

According to police, people have been scammed out of thousands this way.

Always be careful sharing your information with anyone. If something seems off, call law enforcement. If you're uncomfortable reaching out to police, contact someone you trust to discuss the situation.

The Michigan Attorney General also recently reissued warnings on gift card scams and puppy scams.
