The City of Flint has announced it has begun fall fire hydrant flushing as part of its winterization program, a move that will also help facilitate the change in water source.

Flint officials say residents may see discoloration, but its normal. Running cold water from a faucet nearest the water meter for a few minutes will clear the line. A news release from the city says hydrant flushing is part of regular maintenance designed to enhance the circulation of water in the system. For that reason, this year's fall hydrant flushing will also help to better facilitate the temporary switch back to water provided by the Great Lakes Water Authority, formerly the Detroit Water and Sewerage Dept. The flushing will help to clear the system of treated Flint River water and will accelerate the introduction of water provided by the Great Lake Water Authority.

Residents in the areas where flushing is taking place should expect to see activity by city crews and signs marking open hydrants. Continued information on water will be provided at the City of Flint website here.
