If you answered "yes" to one or more of these questions, you may be at risk for diabetes. The Genesys Diabetes and Nutrition Learning Center offers a class that can help you.

"Preventing Diabetes" is a three-session class that will provide participants with advice, information and education on how to reduce the risk of diabetes and adopt practical lifestyle changes.

Next session will take place on Tuesday evenings Sept. 11, Sept. 25 and Oct. 9, from 5:45 pm to 8 pm at the Genesys Diabetes and Nutrition Learning Center located on the Genesys Regional Medical Center Health Park campus in Grand Blanc Township.

Topics covered in the class include: understanding the implications of elevated blood sugar, risk factors of diabetes and learning how to reduce them, lifestyle changes and choices, nutrition, snacking, eating out, benefits of physical activity, identifying cues that impact food and activity decisions, and obstacles to maintaining a lifestyle that will prevent diabetes.

The Genesys Diabetes and Nutrition Learning Center is certified by the Michigan Department of Community Health, and is recognized by the American Diabetes Association. It is considered one of the largest education programs in the state for people with diabetes. Certified educators (including registered dietitians, nurses and social workers) help clients understand their medical condition, and offer support on the journey to behavior change.

Genesys also offers diabetes support group classes every other month. Classes offer support, education, guest speakers and group discussions. Those with diabetes and their families and friends are welcome. The next support group takes place Thursday, Sept. 20 from 1:30 pm to 3 pm in the Genesys Diabetes and Nutrition Learning Center.
