Before the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, the worst mass shooting in US history took place in 1991 at Luby’s Cafeteria in Killeen Texas (not far from Fort Hood).  George Hennard drove his pick up truck into the restaurant and opened fire on over 70 unarmed people.  He killed 20 and wounded many more.

Dr Susan Gratia was one of the people wounded in this shooting, and she lost her mother and father.  At the time, it was a felony in Texas for a women to keep a hand gun in her purse.  That changed after this incident.  Here is Dr. Gratia’s gripping testimony before a Senate Committee taking up an "assault" weapons ban:
