The Department of Justice has a new rule for federal firearms licensees.

The United States Department of Justice announced a new rule on Monday, January 3rd, 2022. The new rule will make it a requirement for federal firearms licensees to certify that they do have secure gun storage devices available for customers to purchase.

When will this new rule from the Department of Justice take effect?

The new rule from the United States Department of Justice will be in effect starting on Thursday, February 3rd, 2022.

What is a secure gun storage or safety device defined as?

According to statutes and regulations, secure gun storage and safety devices include the following:

  • Safe
  • Gun safe
  • Gun case
  • Lockbox
  • Or any device that can be used to store a firearm and can be unlocked only by means of a key, combination, or similar means.

According to FBI data, the numbers of NICS Firearm Background Checks have skyrocketed in the last couple of years. To put it into perspective, from November 1998 through December 2021, nine of the top 10 highest weeks for firearm background checks are from 2020 and 2021. Between March 15th and March 21st, 2021, a total of 1,218,002 NICS Firearm Background Checks were performed.
