The Detroit Lions today placed the franchise tag on Defensive End Cliff Avril. Both the Lions and Avril had hoped to avoid using the tag, but after talks all weekend and this morning, the sides were to far apart in discussions of a long term deal.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the Lions used the non-exclusive version of the tag meaning Avril will be able to negotiate with other teams once free agency begins on April 13, but the Lions retain the right to match any offer or receive two first round picks as compensation if Avril were to sign with another team.

Avril is now guaranteed at least $10.6 million for the next year. He set career highs last year with 11 sacks and six forced fumbles in helping the Lions win 10 games and reach the playoffs.
