Passengers at Detroit Metro Airport faced an unexpected delays this weekend as an American Airlines co-pilot was detained after it was suspected that he was drinking.

The whole thing started when the co-pilot showed up to Metro airport and tried to board the fight bound for Philly.  WXYZ reports that the pilot failed two breathalyzer tests after being detained by police.  American Airlines issued the following statement:

This is a serious matter and we are assisting local law enforcement and the Federal Aviation Administration with the investigation.  We will handle this matter appropriately as the safety and care of our customers and employees is our highest priority. Flight 736 has cancelled and we are reaccommodating our customers on other flights.  We apologize to our customers for the disruption to their travel plans

Detroit Metro officials have said that the man has been released, while it is determined what charges would be filed against him.

As frustrated as the passengers were, I imagine that they are also breathing a big sigh of relief.  Nobody really knows how often something like this actually happens, but I'd fly much easier knowing that all of the drunk people were on my side of the cockpit door.
