Authorities are expected to meet today to discuss charges against a 28-year-old Flint resident who was fleeing from police on Wednesday when the van he was driving struck a 13-year-old girl who later died from her the injuries she suffered.

Misty Kurmas was crossing Saginaw Street from Tobias Street on her way to a nearby church, when a van driven by Mark A. Blount, crossed the center line of Saginaw and struck Kurmas shortly before 5 p.m.

According to Mlive, police said Blount was wanted for an outstanding federal warrant for distribution of heroin and a probation violation warrant. Initially, he was being followed, but not pursued, by unmarked police vehicles when he then  started driving at a high rate of speed. A fully marked state police car drove onto Saginaw Street from Oakley Street with its lights and siren activated  about 10 seconds before the girl was hit by the van. Police said Blount was arrested a short distance away after trying to run. He is currently being held in the Genesee County Jail.

A visitation for Misty will take place Sunday from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Plumb-Smith Funeral Home in Flint Township. Her funeral will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Flint Baptist Temple in Burton.
