An online petition on Care2 has over 100,000 signatures towards their goal of 120,000 to get pet food included on SNAP benefits.

The petition was created by Edward B Johnson Jr, who has been on SNAP benefits for a few months and has been unable to feed his dog. Eligible items that can be purchased while on SNAP benefits are determined by the federal government, but Edwards is collecting signatures in hopes to add pet food to that list.

Edward's post on Care2 says

"Each year, over 40 million low- or no-income people in the United States rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to help purchase food for themselves and their families. It is the most wide-reaching program in the domestic hunger safety net, helping keep millions of families from starving. But what about their pets? Unfortunately, SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy pet food, leaving poor families with pets in a difficult position."
