As more severe weather and storms are expected to hit the area over the next several days, Consumers Energy wants residents to be better prepared. Mary Palkovich, Consumers Energy vice president of energy delivery, says "Michigan's spring storm season is arriving with a fury that could include severe thunderstorms and wind gusts as high as 50-60 mile per hour over the next several days."

Consumers is offering up these important tips to be better prepared for a storm:

  • Charge electronic devices such as cell phones and laptops, and have fresh batteries available for items such as flashlights and weather radios.
  • Have a three-day supply of water and non-perishable food available, and don't forget prescription medication, a first aid kit and pet food.
  • STAY AWAY from downed power lines. People are asked to stay at least 25 feet away from any downed lines and assume that every line is "live" and dangerous. Also, DO NOT touch anything a power line may be touching including trees, fences, puddles and other debris.
  • Report any downed wires by calling 911 or Consumers Energy at (800) 477-5050.
