1911 — William Larned won his fifth straight United States national tennis championship at Forest Hills, N.Y. (More info.)

1935 — Sir Malcolm Campbell of Kent, England, became the first person to drive over 300 miles an hour at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. (More info.)

1950 — Nino Farina became the first Formula One world drivers’ champion by winning the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. (More info.)

1972 — Lasse Viren of Finland recovered from being knocked down in the 10,000-meter race at the Summer Olympics at Munich to come back to win in a world record-time of 27 minutes and 38.3 seconds. (More info.)

1977 — Baseball star Sadaharu Oh hit his 756th career home run in the Japanese league to surpass Hank Aaron’s MLB total. (More info.)

1981 — Jerry Remy of the Boston Red Sox notched an American League record-tying six hits in 10 at-bats of a 20-inning game against the Seattle Mariners. (More info.)

1990 — Relief pitcher Bobby Thigpen of the Chicago White Sox broke the major league save record by recording his 47th save in a 4-2 win over the Kansas City Royals at Chicago. He finished the season with 57 saves. (More info.)
