1908 — Ed Walsh of the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers, 6-1, to earn his 40th victory of the season. (More info.)

1941 — Mickey Owen of the Brooklyn Dodgers allowed a passed ball on a third strike to Tommy Henrich of the New York Yankees with two outs in the top of the ninth inning of Game 4 of the World Series at Ebbets Field. The Yankees rallied after the gaffe and went on to win the championship. (More info.)

1953 — The New York Yankees won their fifth consecutive World Series, beating the Brooklyn Dodgers, 4-3, in Game 6 at Yankee Stadium. (More info.)

1985 — Head football coach Eddie Robinson of Grambling State University won his 324th game, breaking the record set three years earlier by Paul (Bear) Bryant of Alabama. (More info.)

1991 — Fresno State tied an NCAA record by scoring 49 points in a quarter in a 94-17 rout of New Mexico. (More info.)

2001 — Barry Bonds of the San Francisco Giants hit his 71st and 72nd home runs of the season off Chan Ho Park of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Pacific Bell Park in San Francisco to break the major league record for home runs hit in a single season. Bonds finished with 73. (More info.)
