1869 — Rutgers beat Princeton, 6-4, at New Brunswick, N.J., in the first college football game ever played. (More info.)

1929 — The Providence Steam Roller lost to the Chicago Cardinals, 16-0, in the first NFL night game. (More info.)

1991 — After the racially divisive policy of apartheid had kept the nation from the Olympics since 1960, South African officials announced they would send a racially integrated team of athletes to the Summer Games in Barcelona, Spain in 1992. (More info.)

1993 — Despite the intrusion of ‘Fan Man,’ a trespassing parachutist who glided into the ring in the seventh round, Evander Holyfield decisioned Riddick Bowe in 12 rounds at Las Vegas to win the heavyweight boxing title. (More info.)
