1895 — The first American automobile race was held from Chicago’s Jackson Park to Evanston, Ill. and back. (More info.)

1925 — Goalie Georges Vezina of the Montreal Canadiens collapsed in the net during a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Mount Royal Arena in Montreal while suffering from tuberculosis. He died four months later. (More info.)

1929 — Ernie Nevers of the Chicago Cardinals set an NFL record for a single game by scoring all of his team’s points — six touchdowns and four extra points — in a 40-6 win over the Chicago Bears at Comiskey Park. (More info.)

1956 — Don Newcombe of the Brooklyn Dodgers was voted the winner of the first-ever Cy Young Award as baseball’s best pitcher. (More info.)

1981 — Paul ‘Bear’ Bryant of the University of Alabama won his 315th game as head coach to set a then-NCAA record. (More info.)
