1900 — Ban Johnson, president of the newly formed American League, announced eight teams would compete in the second major league in 1901, including several franchises in National League cities like Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia. (More info.)

1931 — Southern California upset Notre Dame, 16-14, at South Bend, Ind., ending the Irish’s 26-game win streak on a final-minute field goal by Johnny Baker. (More info.)

1934 – The New York Yankees bought outfielder Joe DiMaggio from the San Francisco Seals of the Pacific Coast League for $50,000. (More info.)

1971 – The New York Rangers scored a NHL-record eight goals in a single period against the California Seals. (More info.)
