Here are just some of the notable sports moments that happened on December 9:

1934 — The New York Giants, having replaced their cleats with sneakers in the third quarter to get better traction on the frozen field, scored 27 points in the fourth quarter and beat the Chicago Bears, 30-13, in the NFL Championship at the Polo Grounds. (More info.)

1941 — Star pitcher Bob Feller of the Cleveland Indians became the first major league player to volunteer for active duty in the U.S. armed services just two days after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. (More info.)

1965 — The Cincinnati Reds traded Frank Robinson to the Baltimore Orioles for pitchers Milt Pappas and Jack Baldschun and outfielder Dick Simpson. (More info.)

1977 — Kermit Washington of the Los Angeles Lakers punched Rudy Tomjanovich of the Houston Rockets in the face during a brawl. Tomjanovich required facial reconstruction, and Washington was suspended for 60 days and fined $10,000. (More info.)

1984 — Eric Dickerson of the Los Angeles Rams broke O.J. Simpson’s NFL single-season rushing record of 2,003 yards in a 27-16 win over the Houston Oilers. (More info.)
