1920 — Pitcher Howard Ehmke of the Detroit Tigers shut out the New York Yankees, 1-0, at Navin Field in Detroit in 1 hour and 13 minutes — the fastest game in American League history. (More info.)

1931 — Pitcher Bob Burke of the Washington Senators no-hit the Boston Red Sox, 5-0, at Griffith Stadium in Washington. (More info.)

1946 — The Dreyfuss family, the owners of the Pittsburgh Pirates since 1900, sold the franchise to Frank McKinney and John Galbreath for $25 million. (More info.)

1950 — Babe Didrikson-Zaharias won the LPGA All-American Golf Open at the Tam O’Shanter Country Club in Niles, IL. (More info.)

1961 — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League beat the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League, 38-21, in an exhibition game played in Hamilton, Ontario. (More info.)

1976 — The Chicago White Sox wore shorts as part of their uniform in the first game of a doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals at Comiskey Park in Chicago. (More info.)
