1920 — Ethelda Bleibtrey became the first US woman ever to win a gold medal in swimming at the Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium. (More info.)

1950 — Sugar Ray Robinson knocked out Jose Basora 50 seconds into their fight at Scranton, PA to retain the middleweight boxing title. (More info.)

1952 — Virgil Trucks of the Detroit Tigers threw his second no-hitter of the season, beating the New York Yankees, 1-0, at Yankee Stadium. (More info.)

1960 — The Summer Olympics opened in Rome. (More info.)

1967 — Dean Chance of the Minnesota Twins no-hit the Cleveland Indians, 2-1, at Cleveland Stadium. Earlier in the month, Chance pitched a rain-shortened, five-inning perfect game. (More info.)

1985 — Dwight Gooden, 20, of the New York Mets, beat the San Diego Padres, 9-3, at Shea Stadium in New York to win his 14th consecutive game and become the youngest pitcher in major league history to win 20 games in a season. (More info.)
