As it is now, Supreme Court justices are given lifetime appointments, the rational being that their job for life allows them to be free from political pressure. However, the majority of Americans oppose this practice.

According to a new CBS News/New York Times survey of 976 adults, 60 percent think lifetime appointments give Supreme Court justices too much power. Thirty-three percent said lifetime appointments keep justices independent and seven percent didn’t have an opinion on the manner.
