A new study from London, and reported on Fox News, shows a high-powered ultrasound beam can destroy prostate cancer without causing the serious side effects that can plague other treatments.

Trials of the treatment in London and Basingstoke show its possible to destroy the tumor cells without damaging surrounding tissues which are very delicate. Conventional surgery or radiotherapy for prostate cancer can leave half of men impotent and a fifth incontinence. The side effects are so common that many men with slow-growing tumors are advised not to treatment.

During the trial, doctors used an experimental procedure, High Intensity Focused ultrasound (HIFU), to destroy tumors. None of the 41 men treated had incontinence and only 10% had impotence according to the Lancet Oncology journal.
