A former trainer for the Boston Red Sox administered frequent injections of a painkilling drug, a practice in violation of Massachusetts’ law, Yahoo! Sports reported. Former Red Sox star Curt Schilling and other sources claim Mike Reinold, a trainer and physical therapist for the Red Sox who was fired after the 2012 season, injected players with the powerful painkiller Toradol. Massachusetts law prohibits such treatment.

“It is the board’s position that athletic trainers are prohibited from using injectables,” said Amie Breton, director of communications for the Massachusetts’ Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulations.

Schilling and other sources claimed that trainers’ use of Toradol is widespread in Major League Baseball. Schilling said he once couldn’t move his head while with the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he went on to throw a one-hitter with 17 strikeouts after receiving an injection.

“I had a Toradol shot almost every single game for the last 10 years of my career,” Schilling told Yahoo! Sports. “It was never administered by a doctor at home or on the road. I didn’t think it was wrong.”

Reinold told Yahoo! Sports: “Every medical treatment I provided was under the direction, authority and knowledge of a team physician and appropriately documented. Any suggestion to the contrary would be false.”

Massachusetts officials have yet to investigate Reinold. The board could do so if it receives a formal complaint.
