Pope Benedict XVI has announced his resignation. The 85-year-old will stay on until the end of February according to Fox News.

In a statement released by the Vatican, the pontiff said "after having repeatedly examined my conscious before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry."

The last pope to resign Was Pope Gregory XII who stepped down in 1415.
