A neurosurgeon on staff at Genesys will present a talk on bone health - a major issue among the aging population - tonight.

Avery Jackson, MD will discuss the topic as a Genesys Community Education class and will focus on osteoporotic fractures which affect nearly 50 percent of women over the age of 50. The fractures can decrease mobility and quality of life and the individuals are often placed in nursing homes as a result of their limited mobility. According to a news release from Genesys, hospitalizations and costs to the health care system as a result of these fractures are greater than heart attack, stroke and breast cancer combined. Through his talk, Jackson hopes to increase awareness of osteporosis so individuals can seek treatment and prevent further complications. Studies show that the condition is often misdiagnosed or underdiagnosed in 80 percent of cases.

Cost for the talk is just $5 in advance or $7 at the door. The event runs fro 6 to 9 p.m. tonight at the Genesys Conference and Banquet Center in Grand Blanc Township.
