The Boise State football program has been placed on three years’ probation and stripped of nine scholarships (three each for the next three years) after being hit with NCAA sanctions for repeated rules violations regarding extra benefits for recruits and players. The Broncos will also have fewer contact practices (nine instead of 12) during spring practice in the next three years.

The NCAA reported that Boise State “failed to establish an adequate compliance system to report NCAA rules violations with regard to impermissible housing, transportation and other benefits to prospective and enrolled student-athletes.”

Many of the violations related to coaches who helped arrange housing for incoming freshmen who came to campus before the official start of fall camp.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions cited numerous violations that involved 63 current or potential football players over a four year period from 2005 to 2009.

Boise State had self-imposed the three-year probation and three fewer scholarships, but the NCAA cited the school for a “lack of institutional control” and punished the football team with a reduction of six additional scholarships.

The Boise State men’s and women’s tennis and men’s and women’s track and field teams were also hit with penalties for various NCAA rule violations.
