The Flint Monarchs are poised to become the city's first professional women's basketball team.

After two seasons as a semi-pro organization in the Women's Blue Chip Basketball League, the team will merge with Women's American Basketball Association and become a pro franchise for its launch in 2014. The WABA will begin in May 2014 and will run concurrent to the WNBA season.

According to MLive, it's been four years since the state had a women's professional team when the Detroit Shock left for Oklahoma.
