The Michigan State Police celebrate their 100th anniversary on April 19, 2017. They are celebrating with campaign-style hats.

The last time troopers wore these hats was in the 1920s, and MSP was one of only six police agencies that did not wear them in the 20s. They have voted to wear them in 2017 to celebrate the agency's 100th anniversary. The traditional campaign hat is a black straw hat with a clear coat for protection. Trooper hat have a black braid just above the brim, while sergeants hats will have silver braid, and lieutenants will have a gold braid. The Michigan State Police agency began in 1917 with 300 men. In its 100th year, the agency has grown to have nearly 2,800 men and women.
