As children get ready to hit streets for trick-or-treating, the Michigan State Police Third District Headquarters reminds the public to take extra precautions this Halloween. "Part of enjoying Halloween festivities is recognizing possible dangers and taking precautions," said Lt. Brian Cole of the Third District Headquarters. "There are potential risks involved with trick-or-treating, but with the proper safety measures everyone can have an enjoyable and safe Halloween."

The MSP offers these Trick-or-Treat safety tips:

  • Choose flame resistant costumes that are bright in color.
  • Always trick-or-treat with an adult.
  • Fasten reflective tape to costumes to help drivers see you
  • Stay in familiar neighborhoods. Plan your route and share it with your family.
  • Always look both ways before crossing the street. Cross the street only at corners or crosswalks. Do not cross between parked cars.
  • Carry a flashlight.
  • Never approach dark homes. Only visit homes that have a porch light on.
  • Stay in populated, well-lit areas. Do not cut through back alleys or fields.
  • Never enter someone's home
  • Stay in a group.
  • Make sure adults inspect candy before eating it.
  • Be sure to follow community curfew rules.
