On Saturday and Sunday, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources will hold the annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend which will allow residents and non-residents to fish in state waters without a license.

According to WNEM, Free Fishing Weekend has been held sine 1994 to promote awareness of the state's water resources and fishing opportunities, which include more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, 11,000 inland lakes and thousands of miles or rivers and streams.

To encourage more involvement this year, organized activities are scheduled in communities across the state.  A list is available here.
