‘The Simpsons’ Creator Matt Groening Finally Reveals Where Springfield Is Located

What state is ‘The Simpsons‘ hometown of Springfield in? Not only has that been one of TV’s biggest mysteries, but it’s been a long-running joke, as the animated show has teased revealing Springfield’s location numerous times but never has.

Now, the mystery has been solved.

Turns out, Springfield is in Oregon. The show’s creator Matt Groening finally spilled the beans in an interview with Smithsonian Magazine that hit the internet on Tuesday.

Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon,” Groening explained. “The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show ‘Father Knows Best’ took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown. When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the US. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, ‘This will be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’ And they do.”

Groening added that over the years when people from America’s various other Springfields asked him if their hometown was where ‘The Simpsons’ was set, he always just told them that it was.

But now that charade is over. Homer is officially an Oregonian. We imagine other states that boast a Springfield are saying a big “D’Oh!” right about now.
