It's one of those horrible fears we all have in elevators, but fortunately one that never comes true. Except for this guy.

Last week José Vergara Acevedo, 31, stepped into the elevator at Bustamente Community Park in Providencia, Chile, like he probably has hundreds of other times. But after pressing the button for whichever floor he meant to go to, the elevator malfunctioned. It started rising, fast, totally out of control, covering 31 floors in 15 seconds before smashing into the roof above.

Acevedo tried frantically to get the lift to stop, but could do nothing. He suffered serious injuries to his head and legs, and is in the hospital recovering.

Let's just hope his room is on the ground floor.
