United States Congressman Dale Kildee announced today that he has helped secure a $6.9 million grant that will help keep Flint firefighters on the job.

The grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will help avert dozens of layoffs planned for the city's fire department.

According to MLive, the current Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant was set to expire on June 9.

In a statement, Kildee said he was pleased that he was able to help secure this funding for the city at a critical time. He added "these funds are vital for the safety of Flint citizens and firefighters and will help stabilize fire protection in the city during these difficult times."
