Former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy wasn’t a big fan of Martin Luther King Jr.

In fact, during a series of old interviews that were released to the public last week, Kennedy is heard saying “I just can’t see a picture of Martin Luther King without thinking, you know, that man’s terrible.”

According to the tapes, Kennedy’s opinion of King took a nosedive after her husband, John F. Kennedy, told her the civil rights leader had arranged and participated in a hotel orgy while in town for the famous march on Washington in 1963. Later, Robert Kennedy told Jacqueline that King had made jokes about the cardinal who officiated John F. Kennedy’s funeral being drunk.

The Kennedy brothers got this information about King from FBI Chief J. Edgar Hoover, who had wiretapped the civil rights leader. The King surveillance tapes are under seal until 2027, so we won’t know for another 16 years if King actually said and did the things that offended Jackie Kennedy, or if Hoover was just spreading misinformation.
